Big 12 Preview - Nebraska



The Big Ten's expansion to twelve teams, with the addition of Nebraska, was reportedly based primarily on football. So, when Cornhuskers head coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media on Monday, you had to expect the majority of the questions would deal with the team's transition in 2011. Nebraska potentially will have plenty to talk about on the field this season, too. Last season, Big Red was a second away from upsetting Texas in the Big 12 Championship. Nine offensive starters are back from last year's team that went 10-4. Senior Zac Lee took most of the snaps at quarterback last season, but wound up with only 14 touchdowns and ten interceptions. Twelve-hundred-yard rusher Roy Helu is back for his senior year too, along with four starting offensive linemen. Coach Pelini expects some more points on the board this season...

Nebraska's calling card last year was the return of the Black Shirts. The Huskers had the country's best scoring defense last season, surrendering less than 11 points per game. That unit did lose five starters, though, including all-world defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Despite being an interior lineman, the Outland Trophy winner led the team in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, and pass break-ups. Fellow all-conference lineman Jared Crick will be asked to step into Suh's big shoes...

Nebraska opens its 2010 slate at home against Western Kentucky on September 4th. Texas comes to town on October 16th, and Missouri is the next home game on October 30th.
