A Moberly woman was honored at the U.S. Capitol this morning.
Rose Penn "Penny" Ross served in the women's airforce service pilot or WASP program starting in 1943. For her service she received a congressional gold medal.
Penny brought planes from factories to bases, flew experimental aircraft and towed targets for the gunney school. The WASP group consisted of about 1,000 women, but wasn't considered part of the military until 1977.
The congressional gold medal is commissioned by the U.S. Congress as its highest expression of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions of an individual, institution or event.
