The Moberly School District Superintendent wants more information ... before he makes a recommendation regarding eliminating summer school.
State education funding is being reduced by $43 million for the rest of the fiscal year. The Moberly School District is looking at a $170,000 shortfall. Superintendent Mark Penny told the Board Tuesday night it costs the district more than $500,000 to operate summer school. Penny did not make a recommendation to the Board regarding summer school. He notes the Missouri Legislature is still working on the state budget:

During the meeting, the Board heard a budget presentation which featured ideas that have been submitted by district employees ... ideas such as changing thermostats by one degree. District officials are reviewing the suggestions, but emphasize the ideas must comply with federal and state law. Superintendent Penny confirms the Board will discuss the budget during their March 23 work session.
In other news, School Board President Les Keleher presented certificates to four teachers who work with autistic children. The four were honored by the Board, and Penny praised the teachers for their dedication:

Superintendent Penny says the recognition is a great way for the Board to see how dedicated the teachers are. He notes autism is an important issue in Moberly, statewide and nationally.
The Board also approved a YMCA corporate membership, which is for all school district employees. Penny tells KWIX News the YMCA will waive the joining fee for district employees, who can use a payroll deduction. Penny emphasizes the importance of fitness, and says the YMCA is a great partner with the district.
