Noting they are trip hazards, Moberly crews will begin removing 20 downtown trees on Thursday morning. Public Works Director Tom Sanders says those trees are on Reed and Coates streets.
Sanders says eight crew members will be working early in the morning and will be done daily by 9 am. Sanders doesn't have a timetable for how many days the project will take. He does confirm that a committee is working on replacement trees.
Sanders says the downtown trees were put in with grant funding in 1991.
Seven residents, including Championship Sports owner Jim Brooks and former KWIX Radio owner David Shepherd, testified about the issue during a January Moberly City Council meeting.
Brooks and Shepherd opposed a proposal to remove all trees on Reed Street.
