A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday for a former employee at Sam's Health Mart in Moberly accused of embezzling more than $59,000.
55-year-old Donna Louise Burrus of Cairo is charged with eight counts of stealing in Randolph County Circuit Court. Today's (Monday) preliminary hearing will determine whether Burrus is bound over for arraignment.
The Moberly Police Department's probable cause statement quotes Sam's Health Mart owner Salim Tadrus as telling detectives that creditors began calling the store in July 2011 because Burrus wasn't paying the bills. He says he questioned Burrus, who "got agitated and mad" when he tried to get an explanation. Burris resigned in August 2011. Tadrus says he then checked further into the accounts Burrus kept, and found that she had written eight checks to herself, using his signature stamp, totaling more than $44,000. Tadrus told detectives he confronted Burrus about the money, and that she said it was a "loan" and that she would pay him back when she sold her trailer. Tadrus told investigators that he also checked the Sam's Club card that Burrus had used, and allegedly discovered she had charged $14,000 in 2009 and 2010 for personal items like alcohol, groceries, tires and televisions.
