An August 27 jury trial is scheduled for a Kirksville man accused of paddling his 11-year-old daughter because she was on Facebook.
34-year-old Anthony Orwig is charged with one count of felony child abuse in Adair County Circuit Court. Judge Russell Steele has scheduled a two-day trial starting on the 27th.
The Kirksville Police Department's probable cause statement says the daughter told authorities she knew she wasn't supposed to be on Facebook, and used a cell phone to get on the social networking site in December 2010. The girl told investigators Orwig hit her with a wooden paddle 21 times. The probable cause statement says there was "significant bruising" on the girl's upper thighs and buttocks. Orwig told police he used a wooden paddle to hit her six times over a 30-minute period.
