MACON- About 200 people turned out Tuesday night to tour the aging Macon County Jail, which was built in 1909.
The Macon Area Chamber of Commerce and County Sheriff Robert Dawson hosted the event, which also included a barbecue meal. While Dawson praises county officials for helping to maintain the building, he says the jail is coming to the end of its life:

A new jail would probably require a bond issue or a sales tax increase. The Sheriff says while the aging facility may be able to last another one to three years, a new jail will be needed. The Macon County Jail's capacity is 28, and there are currently 15 male offenders. Macon County sends female inmates to the Randolph County Justice Center in Huntsville.
