HANNIBAL MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER

A jury deliberated for more than four hours Wednesday at the Audrain County Courthouse in Mexico before convicting a Hannibal man of the brutal 2010 killing of his fiancee.

42-year-old Calvin Duane Pettey was convicted of first degree murder in the death of Sandy Fugate, who was killed two days before she and Pettey were scheduled to be married. The case was moved from Marion to Audrain County on a venue change. The jury heard closing arguments Wednesday morning, then began deliberating at about 10:05. They returned with a guilty verdict at about 2:20 p.m. Judge Keith Sutherland has scheduled an August 27 sentencing date, and Pettey faces life without the possibility of parole.

Pettey did not take the stand. The prosecution's star witness testified Tuesday. The "Quincy Herald-Whig" reports Rebecca Kirk, who admits having an affair with Pettey, testified that he told her he killed Fugate. The newspaper described Kirk's testimony as "riveting", noting she admitted making plans with Pettey to participate in Fugate's killing and never warned Fugate nor police. Kirk testified she couldn't go through with the plans. Kirk has not been charged.

The victim was shot four times, including twice in the face.
