MACON BANK ROBBER SENTENCED TO 65 YEARS

A Macon man who admits robbing five banks will spend the next 65 years in prison.

26-year-old Jeffrey Heckman pleaded guilty in March to three counts of bank robbery, two counts of bank robbery "with a dangerous weapon" and one count of carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. Heckman admits stealing about $33,000 in five bank robberies, including the June 2011 holdup at Preferred Bank in Brookfield, a June 2011 robbery at Citizens Bank in Harrison County, and the July 2011 robbery at Merchants and Farmers Bank in Columbia. U.S. District Judge Walter Smith sentenced Heckman to 65 years in federal prison during Thursday's court appearance in Waco, Texas. There's no parole in the federal system. Judge Smith also ordered Heckman to pay $29,000 in restitution.

Two co-defendants pleaded guilty in March to federal charges in Waco and are already incarcerated. 24-year-old Jacob Norris of Macon was sentenced to six years, while 23-year-old Alexia Baker was sentenced to 41 months. They were both fined $1,000 and must pay $1,600 in restitution.

Norris and Baker each pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery and one count of aiding and abetting a bank robbery with a dangerous weapon. They admit serving as the getaway driver and lookout while Heckman robbed Merchants and Farmers Bank in Columbia. They also admit aiding and abetting Heckman while he robbed a credit union in Temple, Texas last July.

Mexican authorities captured the three suspects in September in Puerto Vallarta. Mexico deported them to the United States the next day.
