Area grapplers capped an exciting weekend at Mizzou Arena today by claiming a number of medals and one team trophy at the MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
Kirksville headlined title day as the Tigers posted three individual state champions as well as a team championship, totalling 152.5 points. Austin Roper walked away a champion again with a pin just over a minute into his title match at 132. Justin VanHoose became the 21st four-time state champion in Missouri history, claiming the 138-pound title in just under four and a half minutes. Travis Lang's championship made three as he took just three minutes to get a pinfall at 182 pounds. Other Kirksville medalists were Ethan Rentschler, 5th at 106, Chris Hooper, 4th at 152 and Makenna Cook, 2nd at 160.
Moberly added a state champion to the list for the NCMC as Trey Smith became the first Spartan to win a title since Charlie Gibbs in 2006 winning the 152 pound class by a 5-4 decision. Dylan Johnson added a sixth place medal at 120 and John Orscheln finished 3rd at 195.
Brookfield's newest individual state champ claimed his prize at 285. Derek Scates used overtime to pull off a 3-1 decision for the title. Elsewhere for the Bulldogs Cody Niemeier placed 6th at 120, Anthony Cupp finished 6th at 132, Ramzie Cooper was 6th at 145 and Micah Blakely placed 3rd at 152.
Centralia stayed dead even with Brookfield in the point standings as both school ended up with 78 total points. The Panthers also left and individual title heavier as Marc Schmidt finished on top at 120, his second consecutive championship. Mitch Schmidt also medaled, finishing 3rd at 132 and Austin McBride placed 3rd at 145.
Mexico wound up with four medalists. Jake Vitale finished 5th at 145, Monterio Burton was 4th at 160, Sinjon Adams 3rd at 170 and Josh Harlan posted a 3rd place finish at 285.
The other area Class 1 team, Marceline, boasted a pair of medalists as well. Kyle Bell ended his weekend in 4th at 126 and Mark Bradley finished as runner-up at 195.
