MOBERLY- Scholastic will close its Moberly packaging plant Friday, which will impact about 135 employees.
The facility opened in 1999 and had 200 employees during peak times. The plant is located near Highway 24. Company spokeswoman Kyle Good says production is scheduled to end February 3. Good confirms a few employees will remain to handle cleanup and equipment removal, until that process is completed.
Scholastic says industry changes have allowed them to consolidate their inventory into the Jefferson City warehouse, which has eliminated the need for Moberly's facility. Those changes include the discontinued operations of the Back to Basic Toys operation and other process efficiencies. The consolidation is expected to create about 90 new full-time and seasonal jobs in the Jefferson City Distribution Center. The Moberly employees have been invited to apply for the new positions in the Capital City. Ms. Good has declined comment on how many current Moberly employees have been hired to work in the Jefferson City distribution center, saying those are "personal decisions" and that Scholastic won't comment on what the employees choose to do.
Ms. Good says Moberly's Scholastic call center and packaging employees have done a great job over the years.
