WYATT IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION UPDATE

The Missouri House Speaker hasn't assigned Green Castle State Rep. Zachary Wyatt's impeachment resolution to a committee yet. The resolution seeks articles of impeachment against Judge Russell Steele.

Wyatt, a freshman Republican, says he's bound to this course of action by his oath as part of his constitutional duty. House Majority Floor Leader Tim Jones' office says Wyatt has requested that the resolution be referred to the House Standing Committee on Ethics or the Judiciary Committee. Jones' assistant told GoodRadio Wednesday that Speaker Steven Tilley, R-Perryville, hasn't referred the bill yet. Tilley, Jones and Wyatt are Republicans.

Wyatt says this isn't a political issue, but is an "issue of right and wrong". The resolution accuses Steele of perjury, saying he lied to a federal judge in a case involving Heartland Christian Academy in 2004. Judge Steele describes Wyatt's resolution as "politics at its worst". Judge Steele has issued a statement to GoodRadio, saying Representatives Wyatt and Craig Redmon, R-Canton, are using the Missouri House "for what appears to be purely political purposes." Judge Steele's Second Judicial Circuit includes Adair, Knox and Lewis Counties.
