PETITION DRIVES FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT MEASURES

Two volunteer groups, and several Columbia residents gathered Saturday in Columbia to launch a campaign to get two measures on the November ballot.
One group, calling themselves Volunteers for Missourians for Responsible Lending would like to see an interest cap on payday loans in the Show-Me state. The measure calls for a 36 percent cap on small loans and payday loans in hopes that the cap will prevent predatory lending. A 36 percent cap would mean that if a person borrowed $ 500.00, the payback amount would be $ 515.00, as opposed to $ 684.00 which is computed at the current average rate of 444.6 percent.
Another group, Give Missourians a Raise are seeking to get Missouri's minimum wage increased  to $ 8.25 per hour, that would be a one dollar per hour jump from the current minimum of $ 7.25 per hour.
