A November jury trial has been scheduled for a Moberly man accused of kidnapping a woman and threatening to kill her this spring.
48-year-old Johnny Welch is charged with kidnapping, first degree assault and attempted forcible rape in Randolph County Circuit Court. A November 6 jury trial at the Moberly Courthouse has been scheduled, and Boone County Judge Kevin Crane has been assigned to the case. The Missouri Supreme Court assigned Crane, after Welch requested a change of judge.
The Randolph County Sheriff's probable cause statement says the alleged incident happened March 20. The victim says she "ran into" Welch after court that day, and that Welch requested a ride. They then decided to go fishing at a pond on County Road 2420. The victim told investigators they were in a barn getting the fishing poles together, when Welch began to kiss her. When she told him to stop, the victim says he "snapped" and knocked her to the ground. The statement says Welch told the woman she wouldn't live through the night. Investigators say Welch threatened to place her inside a car and dump the vehicle in a pond, "where no one would find her body." The victim was beaten, kicked and choked. The statement also says Welch grabbed the victim by the hair and dragged her on the ground. The victim told deputies Welch eventually left when she pretended to pass out.
Welch is currently incarcerated in Fulton. He had been on parole for possession of a controlled substance, but state Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Cline says Missouri's Probation and Parole Board formally revoked Welch's parole on May 15. Cline tells GoodRadio Welch is scheduled for a parole hearing on October 22.
