A former employee at Sam's Health Mart in Moberly has been found guilty of stealing more than 59-thousand dollars from the store.
55 year-old Donna Burrus of Cairo was charged with eight counts of stealing in Randolph County Circuit Court. She had previously plead not guilty to the charges, but at a hearing last week she changed that plea to guilty, and accepted a plea deal from the special prosecutor in the case, Gary Sprick.
The Moberly Police Department's probable cause statement quotes Sam's Health Mart owner Salim Tadrus (TAD-rus) as telling detectives that creditors began calling the store in July 2011 because Burrus wasn't paying the bills. Burrus resigned in August 2011. Tadrus says he then checked further into the accounts Burrus kept, and allegedly found that she had written eight checks to herself, using his signature stamp, totaling 44-thousand dollars. Tadrus also told investigators that he checked the Sam's Club card that Burrus had used, and allegedly discovered she had charged 14-thousand dollars in 2009 and 2010 for personal items like tires, groceries, furniture and alcohol.
Burrus was sentenced to 7 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on each of the eight counts, with the sentence to be served concurrently. The execution of that sentence is suspended though and Burrus was put on five years supervised probation with specific terms. She has agreed not to disclose any business details from the victim to third parties and also to pay restitution in the amount of $59,106. If she breaks any of the terms of the probation order Burrus could be arrested and imprisoned for up to seven years. The victim in the case, Sam's Health Mart owner Salim Tadrus, has promised not to raise any further charges from the incident as long as Burrus follows the terms of the plea agreement.
