BRIGGS GETS TO 1000 AS MOBERLY TOPS MARSHALL

MARSHALL- Junior Rashaun Smith's 23 points helped lead Moberly to a thrilling 56-55 win over Marshall Friday night in the final regular season game for both squads.

Smith had seven of his 23 in the fourth quarter at a loud Marshall Gymnasium. Senior Cory Briggs scored 20, including the 1,000th point in his brilliant high school career. It came on a crucial free throw late in the game:

Moberly led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 30-26 at halftime. The score was tied at 41 heading into the final quarter. The Owls briefly led twice in the second half. Briggs' free thows late in the fourth provided crucial insurance for the Spartans, because the Owls connected on two triples after that. The final score was 56-55. Marshall had three players in double figures: sophomore Zach Glassmaker had 17, freshman Conner Cooley scored 14 and Alex Maupin finished with 11.

The Owls scored 15 second quarter points, including several baskets where Moberly players did not box out. A furious Spartans coach Mark Anderson called a time-out and yelled at his team to get their attention. We asked Coach Anderson about that during our postgame interview. While he emphasized how impressed he was with Marshall's effort, he made it clear he isn't happy with his squad's play:

Moberly finishes the regular season 16-8 and 7-5 in the NCMC. The Spartans are the #3 seed in district play and will battle Mexico Wednesday night. The Owls fall to 8-17 and 1-11 in conference play. Marshall plays Kirksville in their opening district game. This year's district is at Mexico.
